About Now and The Gift of the Present

“Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is a gift of God, which is why we call it the present.”  ~ Bil Keane

“Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.”  ~ Mother Theresa

“Real generosity towards the future lies in giving all to the present.” ~ Albert Camus

“It’s being here now that’s important. There’s no past and there’s no future. Time is a very misleading thing. All there is, ever, is the now. We can gain experience from the past, but we can’t relive it; and we can hope for the future, but we don’t know if there is one.”  ~ George Harrison

“You spend your whole life stuck in the labyrinth, thinking how you’ll escape one day, and how awesome it will be, and imagining that future keeps you going, but you never do it. You just use the future to escape the present.”  ~ John Green

“I have realized that the past and future are real illusions, that they exist in the present, which is what there is and all there is.”  ~ Alan Wilson Watts

“The Future is, of all things, the thing least like eternity. It is the most temporal part of time–for the Past is frozen and no longer flows, and the Present is all lit up with eternal rays.”  ~ C.S. Lewis

“All that is important is this one moment in movement. Make the moment important, vital, and worth living. Do not let it slip away unnoticed and unused.”  ~ Martha Graham

from The Desk of MarDrag:

The Past, the Present, and the Future…the three time continuums that take up all our thought and energy on a daily basis. The time frames that fill up our experiences, our thoughts, emotions and souls. We rejoice or have regrets about the Past, we enjoy or worry about the Present, and we have hopes and plans for the Future. But, what about our energy and focus? Where do we put that stream, that flow and how does that affect our quality of life and our progress on the path of our Destiny and Life’s True Purpose? How much does the direction of that focus effect where the strands of our complex and gorgeous tapestries are placed and who/what/when they intertwine with?

We can spend so much time and energy agonizing over the Past and feeling remorse, shame or guilt over things that we did or did not do or goals we did not reach. Energy spent. We worry, struggle and suffer over the Present and which direction to take or what decision to make or try to force things to happen when really, we are confused about what it is that we truly want. Energy spent. And, we obsess about the Future, trying to plan, anticipate, control and guess about what will happen or what we think we want to happen. Energy spent.

So, think of this, what of this current moment? What of the immediate Present…that gift that we are given to experience and delight in? Or learn from and choose from. As John Green says above, we live in the Present lamenting the Past and imagining the Future will be so much better, but we do not see the Present for what it is. Today, this moment…there is nothing like it and never will be. This moment will never come again, and we must remind ourselves to become aware of that, to spend each gift of a moment as if there will never be another, because, in all truth, there will not. And how would we spend that moment in the Now…regretting the Past and looking for the Future? How insignificant and irrelevant that must make the Present feel!

What if we took all the energy we spent mourning the Past and looking to the Future…and spent that energy on the Present? How much more of our life might we know if we spent all that energy here…in the Now?  How better would we recognize our Destiny, discover our Life’s Purpose and gather the right Direction if we put that energy in the Now?

Consider this…all the moments of all our experiences of the Past and all the hopes of our Future collide in this one moment of the Present. It is ALL here Now! Because we have it so in our minds.

So, if we can accept everything in our lives that resides in the Present…that is, recognize that the sum of all we were and will be is what we are Now…then we can find some peace within ourselves and go quiet, and allow the Wiser Voices within us and of the Higher Powers to guide us in our next move. We must accept the Present in order to move away from the Past and into the Future. It is what it is for a reason…and we have made it so. Whatever is happening in our lives Now, good or bad, it is indeed happening and it is because we have chosen or allowed it. Once we truly accept responsibility for this, we can move on.

Think about where you would have your stream of energy and focus flow. Think about those strands of your tapestry and where you would have them placed. It would be a tangled skein to have them placed in the Past as they try to draw the picture of the Present while imagining what they will look like in the Future.

The Present is a gift and the potential and possibilities are endless, if we choose to spend our valued time there. Our Destinies require it, our Life’s Purpose is waiting for our attention, and the Direction is to the Now.

Blessings!

  1. Great blog and excellent timing Ms Dragon!

Normally I’m in the future “must do” frame, I can’t sit and relax without looking around and telling myself must do this, must do that….even if I’m not gonna do it Right Now.

This past week I’ve been forcing myself to just enjoy the NOW (being home) and ignore the Must Do voice. Not that I’m not doing what I need to, but I’m not letting it stress me.

Example: Yesterday for the first time in *7* months I sat out on my back deck and instead of focusing on the branch strewn yard….(Must tune-up the chain saw, must fire up the mower and hook up the wagon, must cut up, haul off, pile up branches….) I just enjoyed the moment and relaxed in the fact that I was HOME and sitting on my deck. It was GREAT.

    Where’s my Gold Star?

    • I know how difficult it can be to stay in the Present JustDee, especially with everything you are dealing with in your life. But I am sooooo very glad to hear you had that moment yesterday where you could just sit and enjoy the time you are spending at home. I am very happy for you. Those moments are so precious and needed!

I can’t post the gold star here in comments….but consider yourself “Starred”! Well done little ChickADee! 😀

Hope you enjoy today even more, even if it includes some work! Hugs!

    • That’s awesome JustDee! I am so glad that you were able to just relax and enjoy. Being home must feel great! I know exactly what you mean by the ‘must do’. I get overwhelmed and then it all piles up. I end up not doing any of it! *sigh*

LOL@ Gold Star! But you EARNED it.

      • Being home IS great Boobah!
When I get overwhelmed (to where I don’t want to do ANYTHING) I try to pick one small thing to do like go putter around the shop for an hour or just weedeat this one section of yard….I usually end up getting more done than I expected and I feel better ’cause I don’t have guilt over doing nothing!

    • “JustDee Is Justme”
      A type “A” personality in a type “B” body.
Your Brain is always telling you to be
concerned about what must be done next~
and your “common sense” bone is telling you
to slow the phuck down— ree lax. it’s ok.
      it will get done.

One thing I’d like to say to some of
the people here…. I don’t know how old you are.
I do know that I try to do things I did with ease 25
years ago. I cannot climb on a 12 ft. ladder and change the
light bulb. (that will be in next Wednesdays funny—
“how many adult women does it take to change a light
      bulb in New Jersey?”
My point being….. pls pls pls @ JustDee, can’t
you find someone to do this stuff for you??
You work so hard, you take care of everyone-
      take care of yourself(like today-)

      I remember the 1st time I noticed @JustDee.
She was traveling and couldn’t get Bravo on the
TV at the place she was staying. She amazed me.
She got on line and laughed along with the rest
of us even tho she didn’t get the show on TV.
      Now…. that’s a good sport.

      …….. ;-)…….

      • NJBev….wise words for JustDee…as well as you…and everyone else. I definitely can’t do the things I used to do…was just talking to DD about that because, in my head I think I can, but then the ole’ bod says, nope, no ma’am!!

Hope you are doing better NJBev….and your DD is safe and sound, and hubby is feeling better too.

        Sending warm thoughts and hugs!

      • Awwww, thanks Bev! But you give me too much credit!
I do agree with being a type A brain in a type B body (lol), and yeah, I can’t do what I could even 10 years ago. It pisses me off! (I’m 54)

I’d love to have some help with the big stuff but I don’t want to tell a stranger,”We’re going to work for 2-3 weeks then I’l be gone for several months”.

I do have a guy for the last couple of years that mows my yard and he does some handyman stuff so that’s great – but he’s older and can’t do the “heavy” work.

  2. Awesome blog!!!! Great quotes and I really loved the following:

“What if we took all the energy we spent mourning the Past and looking to the Future…and spent that energy on the Present? How much more of our life might we know if we spent all that energy here…in the Now?”

I waste a lot of energy worrying about the past, present, and future! LOL. No wonder I am exhausted all the time!

Thank you for a fantastic blog, Mardrag!!!

    • NJBev!!!! Thank you so much!!!! Btw, I am really sorry about your DD’s car. That is scary. But as long as she is okay, that’s all that matters. I am also sorry to hear about your hubby. I don’t know what to say except my thoughts and prayers are with you. oxox

  3. ummmm
    did I miss something?
Is Mardrag on Vacay or something?

I know it’s only one day but ….. I guess
I kinda get use to (or is it used to??? someone help
me….) something and Mar usually lets us know if
    she’s taking a day off.

Hopefully her computer gave her sh!t again and
    it just needs a tune-up~

    Where you be, Miss Mar???

    • Hey NJBev…I am here lady! Occasionally, I will leave a post up for 2 days if it is a good one that I would like people not to miss….or if I don’t have time to write one, which only happens once in a great while.

I am sorry you missed one today, but I just wrote tomorrow’s post, so come back for that one.

I adore you for thinking of me though! Computer and all else is ok…..just wanted this post to get a good looking at!

HI hope you are well…and family too.
Much Love & Hugs to you!
