The Music of Childhood

I mean this literally. I frequently watch PBS because they show some wonderful concerts of all genres of music, some quite retro or obscure. I love it as I have a brief background managing rock bands and I listen(ed) to a whole lotta different types of artists and music. It was a blast and is now part of my matured (giggle) playlist of current tunes.

The other day, PBS presented a 2hour special about a band that was dear and close to my heart growing up in the late sixties and seventies. This band and their music, in fact, shaped much of my adolescence and teens. I evolved into a rock and roll girl…but during that period I was all about…The Carpenters. I know, I know…but they had some amazing songs and the musical arrangements Richard Carpenter put together were astounding in their complexity and perfection. Karen Carpenter had the voice of an angel. She was my first girl crush. I wanted and got a drum set because I thought it was so cool that a girl could play. While I loved all of their “hits”, I took to some of their lesser known material and would play the songs over and over…my brother banging on the wall of the next room yelling, “How many more times are you going to play that?” Giggle…oh plenty Bro!

Hearing these songs again (I have not heard them for many, many, many…years) washed over me like a gentle but large tidal wave. I hardly expected it. I sat down to watch just for fun and nostalgia’s sake…but I came away moved…and dare I say, changed just a little. It is interesting to note (pun unintended but stays) how much music does affect, influence, and shape our lives. We all hear certain tunes that sway us to recall the times in our lives that these melodies flowed through. So listening to these songs, all at once and together, really formed a vessel to ride that tidal wave of memories…but not only memories…because music evokes emotions, so when the memories come, so do the emotions attached to them. I remembered it all, some good, some not, but it was all Me.

It was moving, but not in a bad way. I just…well, transcended for 2 hours to that time in my life, which I intentionally do not think about every day. I mean, adolescence and teens are some of the most profound years and we all have wonderful and horrid memories of them. But…because this music was so important to me back then, I began to remember parts of me, pieces of things, blips I hadn’t had on my radar…and in an odd way, it filled up a part of me I (now for the cliché) didn’t exactly know wasn’t entirely filled. Like small pieces of the puzzle inched toward the bigger picture and went, oh, that’s where I fit in.

These days afterward I feel altered just a bit, but for a better fit into my whole self. Does that make sense? (she asks shaking her head!).

If you haven’t or never do listen to Music of Your Childhood…I strongly recommend it. Not a song here or there, sit down for an afternoon and “pull out all the old tunes”. (whatever that means in this digital age).  Just sit and relax into the music, let your mind wander and your heart and soul follow. Are there some things there, some feelings, some things that you lost along the way? Would it make you feel better to let them back in again? Would it open any doors that might have been closed? Is there magic in those tunes, words, and melodies that belongs back in your Self?

I can tell you, that is how I felt, and it was good. Have fun with it…and may the Music of Childhood bring you closer to YourSelf and make you fall in Love all over again…with You!

Weekend Inspiration ~ Meditation

M 16

We live in a very noisy world,  our minds assaulted daily with the clatter of life and the commotion of chaos. Sound comes at us from everywhere, and with technology as it is, we have the diversion and distraction of multiple sources at a time…be it phones, computers, music players, television…and so much more. We live in a time of constant communication…yet we have forgotten how to communicate…in Silence.

With all of the stimulus and racket coming at us, it is so important to carve out time to go into the quiet, to experience silence…so that our inner voices can once again be heard. If we are always only listening to the voices and sounds outside ourselves, our equilibrium of life tips and stumbles. For, it is within those quiet moments that our wise inner voice can speak to us and guide us. It is the Soul we need to remember to listen to, it speaks the words that would aid us and show us the way of our life.

As busy as we can be…if we take just 10/15 minutes a day to go quiet, clear our minds, and seek the “Sounds of Our Souls”, it can and will make such a difference in the quality of our daily life and the Peace we seek…and it contributes to the overall Peace of the planet. Take a few moments today to meditate in silence…and see what the quiet can bring to your senses.

Monday Message ~ Life’s Messages

I woke this morning not sure yet where to look for our Monday Message. As I sat and meditated, asking for guidance to that message, a rustle of movement, a blur out of the corner of my “eye” came into vision, and as it came clear, I saw it was a Hawk, soaring across my mind. Our answer! So, I took to my “Animal Medicine Cards” by Jamie Sams & David Carson to see what the Hawk has to say to us this morning:

Hawk 1

Hawk: “Messenger”

Message (paraphrased): “Hawk medicine teaches you to be observant, to look at your surroundings. Observe the obvious in everything that you do. Life is sending you signals. Life is the initiation.

Right now, a clue about the magic of life is being brought to you. This Magic can imbue you with the power to overcome a currently stressful or difficult situation. The test is your ability to observe the nuances of Power lurking nearby. Is Power the talent you have and are not using? Are solutions always hard to find because you have lost the broader vision of Hawk? Pay attention! You are only as powerful as your capacity to perceive, receive, and use your abilities.

Hawk’s cry signals the need for the beholder to heighten awareness and receive a message. You are to be aware of signals in your life – so notice and receive them. Hawk may be teaching you to grab an opportunity which may be coming your way. On the other hand, Hawk may be bringing you the message that you should circle over your life, and examine it from a higher perspective. From this vantage point you may be able to discern the hazards which bar you from freedom of flight. Remember, Hawk has a keen eye and a bold heart, and flies close to the light of the Sun.”

Hawk 2

from the Desk of MarDrag:

I believe in Messages. I believe that signals about our lives are everywhere, if we but listen and look. It requires broadening our vision and hearing, and quieting the daily chatter, and when we do, we will pick up things that we would otherwise miss completely. We are intuitive by nature, and we can either ignore that part of ourselves, or acknowledge it and give it credence and power.

There are whispers of Messages all around us. Look and Listen.

Hawk 4

The Hawk, by nature, has a keen eye and ear. He can fly high and observe the movements on the ground with vital clarity. His senses are crystal clear, and he is bold in his knowledge that he has Power. He searches – looking and listening – for his path and his prey and moves swiftly when the opportunity shows itself. So take a view of your life from that higher perspective so you can see the whole of it and what or where you must take action next.

There is Magic to be had in life. If we listen to the Hawk, and the Messages that life and the Higher Powers breathe into our threads on the tapestry, then we can broaden our vision about our lives and create all that we need, want and desire.

Hawk 3

Be like the Hawk…listen attentively, clear your vision, notice your surroundings and all the small (or large) nuances in it like chance meetings, a random thought, an idea, an unexpected happening…for they all have voices that tell you something. And be bold enough to recognize your abilities and talents for the value that they hold. They are what will take you forward into a better life.

Now Listen…for the rustlings of A Message!

Thoughts For The Day

T 4

“Sometimes it takes a good fall to really know where you stand.”  ~ Hayley Williams

MarDrags’ Thoughts:

Floating on a cloud through life does not a character make. It is when we fall off the cloud and pick ourselves up again that we find out how much power we really have. So we all need a good fall once in awhile to find out how strong we are and to tap into the creativity that builds the foundation that will break our fall the next time.

T 2

“Deep in the human unconscious is a pervasive need for a logical universe that makes sense. But the real universe is always one step beyond logic.”  ~ Frank Herbert

MarDrags’ Thoughts:

Sometimes…things just do not make sense. And that can throw us off and confuse us. It can make us question our ability for critical thinking, which comes from our logical side. If we could only have all the answers to all our questions, with logical solutions and insight, then we might get it right, we think. But…logic goes only as far as we can see right in front of us. And the real creativity…the real universe…is way beyond logic. Look into the empty spaces, outside the boxes, and see the gifts there.

T 3

“Judging is preventing us from understanding a new truth. Free yourself from the rules of old judgments and create the space for new understanding.”  ~ Steve Maraboli

MarDrags’ Thoughts:

There seemed to be so many references to “space” this week in the blog posts. And here is yet another. I think the universe is trying to tell us something! I like this quote because it is so true that judging ourselves, circumstance, or others limits our scope of understanding and therefore limits our creativity. Look at any old judgments you may be holding onto that no longer work in your current frame of thought. Once released, a space opens up to be filled with all the goodies that the old judgment told you you could not have. Let go…and open up.

The Intuitive Guide

Intuition 1

from The Desk of MarDrag:

This quote caught my attention a while back and I have been meaning to write a post about it. It seems timely, what with Change coming, and an open, blank space to fill up with whatever we want to create. So…it stands to reason that Intuition would be an especially important tool at this time.

For Intuition is an impeccable guide. We ask all the time for guidance and help to understand the circumstances in our lives. And we often need assistance to get from one place to another as well. Generally, we look to and ask those outside ourselves for this guidance and help…and we forego or forget this loyal, worthy, all knowing voice within us called Intuition. And the thing is…it is THE best friend we will ever have…and it gives THE best advice and answers we could ever hope to get from anyone or anything else.

But most importantly…and as the quote says so eloquently…Intuition guides us to the thoughts that initiate creativity. When we have a burst of Intuition, and listen to it, new thoughts and ideas spark, and the flame of creativity is fanned into a roaring fire that burns away doubt and infuses us with the heat of potential and possibilities…that we may not have seen or thought of before.

So…I have a little challenge for you. Just for today, in every choice or decision you have to make today…use your Intuition. Use that wise inner voice for every task you undertake. Even when ordering your lunch…ask your Intuition what is best for you to eat for your health today. Experiment with “going with your gut”. How many times was that voice, that Intuition, on the mark when you used it? How much better did things turn out for having listened to your own inner wisdom? Or, if they did not turn out “better” due to other factors…was it still “right” that you listened to your own voice…even if you had to go another way?

Intuition 2

Practice using your Intuition. The more you use it, the stronger and more confident it gets…and the more you benefit. No one knows better what is best for you. Believe in that inner voice. It comes in Peace.

Thoughts For The Day

Thoughts FA 2

“Sometimes when things are falling apart, they may actually be falling into place.”  ~ Author Unknown

MarDrags’ Thoughts:

Life is a series of hills and valleys. When we are climbing and conquering those hills, we are building and forming and creating our way upward. But, when we are coming down the opposite slope and heading for the valley…as sometimes happens in life…it looks like everything is falling apart and we worry that all that we have worked so hard to create is coming apart at the seams and we become discouraged. But if we look from our observer position, we might see that, even though things are unraveling or changing, they are actually pieces of the puzzle that are shifting around to bring about something new that we might not have even considered…had the shifting and falling apart not happened. How many times can we recall saying, “I never would have gotten HERE if THAT had not happened”? TRUST!

“Stillness is the space that life flows through.”  ~ Marynance Schellenbach

MarDrags’ Thoughts:

Go into the Quiet, the Stillness, and listen for the voice of Life, Your Life. That voice that you can only here in the silence. Ask your questions…and hear the answers that you might miss through all the cacophony of every day life. There is where the flow moves.

Thoughts Flame

“The spirit of (wo)man is an inward flame; a lamp the world blows upon but never puts out.”  ~ Margot Asquith

MarDrags’ Thoughts:

One’s Spirit can never be vanquished. It is the Eternal Flame within us that will always be present, no matter how tough our lives can get. Look to that Flame for Light and Life. Trust that Flame will never go out…and watch that Trust fan the Flame into a golden ball of purpose and life. Do not focus on the darkness around the Flame…focus on the Flame and it will grow and inspire you.

Thoughts For The Day

Thoughts Plane

“When everything seems to be going against you, remember that the airplane takes off against the wind, not with it.” ~ Henry Ford

MarDrags’ Thoughts:

Sometimes it feels like the world is working against us, but we have the power to fly into it, face it, rise above it…and soar. Face the wind…and listen.

Thoughts Discouragement

“Discouragement is a negative emotion with more than one trick up its dark sleeve. It tricks you into mentally or emotionally dwelling in the very place you want to leave. Drop all such sorrow permanently by daring to see through this deception of the unconscious mind. You have a destination far beyond where you find yourself standing today”  ~ Guy Finley

MarDrags’ Thoughts:

Remember, there is a bigger picture than just the snapshot you are looking at today. This day and its difficulties do not define you as a whole person, or the whole of your life. Tomorrow, you will wake and have another chance to do it differently or make another choice. Trick the trickster of the deception Guy Finley speaks of and see through it, thereby taking all the power away from that negative emotion. Seek to have the courage to step out of discouragement, who only wants us to stay there because, on it’s own, it has no power.

Thoughts Cosmic

“We are travelers on a cosmic journey, stardust, swirling and dancing in the eddies and whirlpools of infinity. Life is eternal. We have stopped for a moment to encounter each other, to meet, to love, to share. This is a precious moment. It is a little parenthesis in eternity.”  ~ Paul Coelho

MarDrags’ Thoughts:

Sometimes, when I am in a deep reflective mood, I think about the vastness of the universe, all the stars, planets, and living things that inhabit our world. I think about the expanse of time…how it has gone on and will go on eternally. I think about all those people who have gone before us…and those that will come after us. And the hugeness of all of that puts any problems or discomforts I have into perspective. What becomes most important is what the quote says above…”we stop for a moment to encounter each other, to meet, love, and share.” That is, indeed, the most precious moment of our existence. Everything else just falls away, will change or evolve. Make those precious moments count!

On Self-Acceptance

“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will spend its whole life believing that it is stupid.” ~ Albert Einstein

Self 5

from The Desk of MarDrag:

~ We should not judge ourselves for what we can not do, or what we are not, or what our limitations are…but embrace ourselves for all that we CAN do, and exactly what and who we are. Focusing on what we do not know makes us feel stupid…and takes away the courage to learn. We end up feeling inadequate, when there are so many things we DO know.  Acknowledge that you do not know everything…but that you are a genius at what you do know!

Self 3

~ Take a moment to reflect on your self and all the qualities that make you who you are. And accept them. If there are things you want to change, then set about changing them. But the essence of who you are is your life blood. Learn to be comfortable with your essence, accepting your limitations while honoring your strengths. Put your attention on those strengths and they will grow. Just as putting attention on your weaknesses will make them grow. When you feel your mind stray to the chatter that keeps negative energy alive, consciously switch your mind to focus on one of your strengths and remind yourself of your genius in that strength. Remember, no one does it like you do! Celebrate all that you are. Be grateful for what you are blessed with in life, focus on what does work, and build on that.

Self 1

~ And then take that moment, and accept who you are, right then and there, and if just for that moment, be good enough, know that you are the greatest you, and that you are growing all the while. Be grateful for all that you have, and for the challenges that make you more than who you thought you could be.

Self 2

“You are very powerful, provided you know how powerful you are.” ~ Yogi Bhajan
