Breath of Life

 

When I woke this morning, I had the urge to seek a message from the animal kingdom. They were abundant in my dreams last night, so I took to my “Animal Medicine Cards” and book, “The Discovery of Power Through The Ways of Animals” by Jamie Sams and David Carson and the card I pulled was the Dolphin. Here is what it had to say:

Dolphin: “Breathe, Take In Life Force, Accept The Gift of Usable Energy, Touch The Invisible”

Message (paraphrased): “Dolphin speaks to us of the breath of life, the only thing that humans can not go without for more than a few minutes. We can live without water and food for days, but oxygen is the source of our sustenance. Within the breath we encounter the rhythm of energy that all life emits. In changing the rate or rhythmic texture of our breath, we find an easy way to connect with Divine energy as well as with our own personal rhythms.

Dolphin is the keeper of the sacred breath of life, and teaches us how to release emotions through breath. Dolphin creates rhythm, swimming through the water and breathing before submerging, then holding its breath for the duration of underwater travel. As Dolphin comes above water again, it blows its breath out in a manner resembling the popping of a cork. We can use this same technique to pull the stopper on our tensions and create total relaxation.

Be mindful of your body rhythms and patterns of energy.  Breathe and know that you are whole.”

As the book says, breath is the sustenance of our lives. By becoming aware of the rhythm of our breath, we can tap into our own personal rhythms and change or adjust them. We can also release tension and emotions that have built up because of stress or worry. We can notice that, when we sit for long periods, our breath becomes shallow. When we are in movement, our breath becomes deeper.

By consciously  paying attention to our breath, we can help our minds and bodies to release and relax. Haven’t we all been told when we are upset to “just breathe” in order to calm down or relax? And it works. But we do not have to wait until we are upset to use that technique.

As the message indicates…sometimes we feel we are “just trying to keep our heads above water”…and that if we submerge, we will be overwhelmed. But Dolphin shows us that we can survive those times of traveling underwater…and emerge again, able to release the tension and stress that difficult times create. And we can release it all, through our breath. It is the Life Force that sustains us, that connects us to our inner life force and feeds our cells the precious oxygen they need to flourish and thrive. When we breathe deep, we are nurturing our mind, body and spirit…in one breath.

So take a few moments each day to close your eyes, breathe deeply…take the breath all the way down past your chest and into your belly, your core. Hold it for a few seconds, then let it go, like the pop of a Dolphin breath, and release your tension. See it flowing out of you as you exhale. Do this several times and feel your body and mind relax as well as promoting the blood flow through your cells. There is also the element of connecting to a higher energy with prolonged deeper breathing.

So, no matter how, when, where or why you do it…take those few minutes daily to breathe life into your mind, body, and soul and tap into the rhythms of your unique being. Feel that deeper connection to Self as your breath flows through you. And be as the Dolphin…go with the flow.

National Relaxation Day

I have an amusing book called “The Bathroom Trivia Almanac” and, yes, it sits in a prominent place in one of my bathrooms…there for reading material when needed. 🙂 It actually has some interesting facts and fun information in it…just like a regular almanac. It has a pretty maroon hardcover too, with bright gold lettering!

Yesterday, I happened to pick it up and looked ahead to today and was surprised to see that today, August 15th, is National Relaxation Day. How about that? A designated day to Relax! I have no idea who declared August 15th the National Day to Relax…but let’s take what we can get.

Now, most of us do not have the luxury of taking the day off…but if you can…you have a good excuse. Take the day and let yourself Relax and Rejuvenate. Maybe change your plans and spend the day in dial down mode…give yourself that gift.

For the rest of us, if we can’t take the day off…we can still get some Relaxing in, which is good for the soul. Take a lunch break and go sit at a park instead of eating at your desk. Take a walk around the block, or even sit in your car. Take some long deep core breaths and let the stress and tension within flow out with the breath and feel yourself Relax. Those deep, core breaths where you breath in, take the air in past your chest, all the way down to your belly, even push it out a little with that breath…and then release it in a long, slow exhale. Feel all that pent up stress just flow out of you and give you relief. Even a few minutes of this can change your entire day and/or attitude. And, even if you can’t “get away”, sit at your desk, or in the bathroom stall, close your eyes, and imagine you are on a sandy beach listening to the waves kiss the shore, and take some of those deep breaths, releasing your stress and worry, if even for a few minutes.

You will be amazed at the difference it will make in your day. And remember too…you don’t have to wait for National Relaxation Day to do this. Do it every day, and increase your quality of life a little bit each day. It adds up!

A Friday Message

 

This past week the energy has been very tense. Everyone seems to be feeling it. Everywhere I go and everyone I speak with, as well as my clients and myself…are feeling this taut and stressful energy. And we are having a tough time of moving through it. Whether you believe in this sort of thing or not…in my quest to seek the source of this discomforting energy…I found the planets are in a ruckus, with Mercury having gone retrograde a few days ago. I have a certain “connection” to this little planet and its retrograde antics since, maaaaany years ago when I was bartending, I was introduced to its power when I bent down to grab a wine bottle and came up to the drawer of the cash register slamming into my forehead and knocking me out. I was told at the time by someone who follows planetary alignment, etc., that it happened at the very moment of retrograde. Thanks for the message Mercury! I made it a life task to always know when Mercury was on the move.

But, if planetary alignment is not your thing…there is still something very wicked about the energy this week. I have been encouraging everyone to keep taking deep core breaths, staying as balanced as possible, and when the feeling gets too intense…go within and cleanse your energy. However it works for you.

So, it is no surprise that this morning I felt compelled to seek a message from one of my tools to see if we can find some further enlightenment. I was drawn to my deck “Medicine Cards – The Discovery of Power Through The Ways of Animals” by Jamie Sams and David Carson. It seems the animal kingdom has some wisdom to impart  – and the card that came to my hand is:

Frog 1

FROG ~ Cleansing ~ “Bring In The Water, Tears Cleanse Your Feelings, Refill With Well-Being”

Message (paraphrased): “Frog medicine is akin to water energy. Frog teaches us to honor our tears, for they cleanse the soul. All water rites belong to Frog, including all initiations by water. If Frog hopped into the cards today, it may be calling in the cleansing you need. If you were to look at where you are today, would you use any of the following words to describe your condition: tired, overloaded, harried, frustrated, guilty, itchy, nervous, at a loss, empty, weakened?

If so, take a break and allow yourself to bathe in the waters of Frog medicine. This could mean a long, relaxing bath, disconnecting the phone, “yelling” stop, or taking in deep, cleansing breaths. The key thought is to find a way to rid yourself of distractions and to replace the mud with clear energy. Then replenish your parched spirit, body, and mind. Call to Frog and find peace in the process of cleansing to contribute to your new state of serenity and replenishment.”

Well, I called that one a bit didn’t I? LOL! When the energy gets this intense, and there does not seem to be a way around it, the best thing to do is hunker down and go within and take care of the Self. We are the ones that have to get through it, and we should nurture and give ourselves the attention we need to maintain until we pass to the other side of that energy.

Take those deep, core breaths…the ones that you inhale past your chest and into your belly. Hold it there a few seconds…then exhale…and as the breath leaves you, imagine all your stress and tension leaving your mind, body, and soul. Do this frequently and keep cleansing that tension. And, take opportunities to “go to the water”…whether it be a long, relaxing bath or shower, swimming, or going to a body of water…as well as drinking lots of water to flush the physical tension. And also…those therapeutic tears…let them come. Let those jewels of teardrops escape, drip from your lashes, roll down your cheeks and splash on your clothes. It is OK! Let them come and cleanse you of all that is causing your tension. Feel the sweet release as you breathe through it. We all feel better after a good cry…and there is nothing at all wrong in allowing ourselves that moment.

Now…after your cleansing and release…do not forget to fill yourself up with something that will replenish your spirit, mind, and body. Do something nice for yourself, eat a treat, meditate, whatever means something to you that fills you up with well-being and pleasure.

I am not sure just how long this phase of energy will last…but we will get through it. Keep the Focus on cleansing, balancing and replenishing and let the rest of it work itself out. Frog says…flow through it.
