The Power of Animals ~ The Owl

I was recently reminded…through a post on another blog and a lovely conversation…of the time I spent living in New Mexico, studying the culture, mingling with the tribes, and participating in their rituals and way of life. I had some very deep spiritual experiences there, and found a piece of my self I never knew existed. It was a sacred and mystical time…and the recollections are profound. While there, I met an extraordinary woman , a Native American medicine teacher and member of the Wolf Clan teaching lodge of the Seneca Nation. She was of Iroquois and Choctaw descent, and herself, studied with Mayan and Aztec teachers. She was a remarkable spirit and teacher, and I learned much from her. Some things that have stayed with me…all these many years later.

She has written several books, one of which I have referenced here on the blog. This is the book, with accompanying medicine cards called “The Discovery of Power Through the Ways of Animals”, written by Jamie Sams and David Carson. I have pulled and written about these cards for you before…and now I am called to do so again…with visions of visions of a time so well spent. And so, as always when I use my cards, I spread them out before me, ask for the divine message, and pull a card from the deck. Today’s card is:

Owl 1

Owl: “Honor intuition. Use discernment. Outsmart deception. Trust your first impressions.”

Message (paraphrased): “Traditionally, Owl sits in the East, the place of Illumination. Since time immemorial, humanity has been afraid of the night, the dark, the unseen – waiting fearfully for the first crack of morning. Conversely, night is Owl’s friend. In many cultures, Owl is a symbol of wisdom. This is because Owl can see that which others cannot, which is the essence of true wisdom. Where others are deceived, Owl sees and knows what is there. Owl’s superior “night vision” shows it the way.

If Owl is your personal medicine, no one can deceive you about what they are doing, no matter how they try to disguise or hide it from you. You may be a little frightening to be around, since so many people have ulterior motives which you see right through. You cannot be fooled.

If you have pulled the Owl card today, you are being asked to use your powers of keen, silent observation to intuit some life situation. Owl is befriending you and aiding you in seeing the total truth. Owl can bring you messages in the night through dreams and meditation. Pay attention to the signals and omens. The truth always brings further enlightenment.”

Owl 3

from The Desk of MarDrag:

Illumination…and shedding light on a subject…is Owl’s message here. If you are “in the dark” about something…do not fear that darkness, for there is wisdom to be found there. Go quiet, and use your powers of silent observation to “see” through the veil of darkness to the truth of the matter.

Intuition is sacred…do not underestimate it. Intuition sees in the dark like the Owl…so listen carefully to what it tells you. Practice by closing your eyes and listening to the sounds around you…as well as the voice within you. The more you work at this, the keener your instincts will become and the more you will “see” beyond the physical, mundane plane. Intuition leads to enlightenment. Listen with your heart and your soul.

Owl may bring you dreams and signals, so take heed and give them attention.

Above all…know that your sight and understanding go far beyond what you now see, there in front of you. Look deeper.
