Over the course of my long years of life study, I have gathered many tools from all walks of life that impart pieces of wisdom that have added richly to my self-discovery and ability to learn from life lessons. Those tools have come in the form of the Affirmation Cards I have mentioned here, the Animal Medicine Cards I have written messages about here, and a book of Wise Quotes by a Reverend that I have written about as well…just to name a few. In my travels and gathering, I also came upon a tool used by the Vikings in ancient times. They are called “The Runes” and it was a type of alphabet they used to communicate and they painted some of these symbols on their shields for protection and guidance when going to war. I have a set of carved stones with an accompanying book, and at times, I look to them for messages, just as I do the other tools I have written about.
I was looking at them last night, and one stood out to me, with a lovely message that I wanted to share with you here, as I often do. This is taken from “The Book of Runes”, interpreted by Ralph Blum, with a preface by Dr. Martin Rayner, University of Hawaii School of Medicine.
The Rune I pulled is: Mannaz
It’s Meaning is: The Self
Message (paraphrased): “The starting point is the Self. Its essence is water. Only clarity, willingness to change, is effective now. A correct relationship to your Self is primary, for from it flow all possible correct relationships with others and with the Divine. Remain modest, regardless of how great may be your merit, be yielding, devoted and moderate, for then you have a true direction for your way of life.
Be in the world, not of it. And yet do not be closed, narrow or judging. Remain receptive to impulses flowing from the Divine within and without. Strive to live the ordinary life in a non-ordinary way. Remember at all times what is coming to be, and passing away, and focus on that which abides. Be content to do your task for the task’s sake. Herein lies the secret of experiencing a true present. Know thyself.”
from The Desk of MarDrag:
I love this message because it speaks to what I believe so deeply and write about often on this blog…being true to the Self. And in order to be true to the Self….we must know the Self. If we strive to learn all we can about who we are and what our true path is in life, then from that clarity, all that we do and all our relationships will be true and correct…including our relationship with the Divine, that Greater Power that has such influence in our lives. By whatever name we call that Divine Energy…we are connected to it.
Through the knowing of the Self comes peace and calm and acceptance. In accepting our Self, we gain compassion and patience and can be more accepting of others and their lives and paths. It is not within us to judge when we are accepting and compassionate. If we can allow our Self to Be, we can allow others to Be as well and yield to harsh sentiments, focusing on love and positive energy. And through this love and compassion, we can remain receptive to the messages, love, and answers that come from the Divine…for that is what the Divine is about, how the messages come to us.
And this is how we “live the ordinary life in a non-ordinary way”. To rise above judgment, fear, and closed hearts is to “be in the world but not of it”. We do not need to follow “the norm”….we need to rise above it and bring others with us so we can have a world that is free of pain, sorrow and oppression and cause “the norm” to change.
Do this task…and all life’s tasks for the sake of the work…not for the outcome. Take joy and pride in living the truest and best life you can. Remember the lessons of the past and be mindful of the future while you focus on the present. You are living the future that your past created….and you are creating the future from your actions in the present. Be Mindful!
Above all…know thyself. The true, deep, knowing Self. It is the most beautiful You!
