“Success is determined not by whether or not you face obstacles, but by your reaction to them.” ~ Ben Carson
“Often it isn’t the mountains ahead that wear you out, it’s the little pebble in your shoe.” ~ Muhammad Ali
“A bruise is a lesson…and each lesson makes us better.” ~ George R.R. Martin
“Nothing will ever be attempted, if all possible objections must be first overcome.” ~ Samuel Johnson
“It still holds true that man is most uniquely human when he turns obstacles into opportunities.” ~ Eric Hoffer
“The obstacles of your past can become the gateways that lead to new beginnings.” ~ Ralph H. Blum
“The lotus is the most beautiful flower, whose petals open one by one. But it will only grow in the mud. In order to grow and gain wisdom, first you must have the mud — the obstacles of life and its suffering. … The mud speaks of the common ground that humans share, no matter what our stations in life. … Whether we have it all or we have nothing, we are all faced with the same obstacles: sadness, loss, illness, dying and death. If we are to strive as human beings to gain more wisdom, more kindness and more compassion, we must have the intention to grow as a lotus and open each petal one by one.” ~ Goldie Hawn
from The Desk of MarDrag:
We are, none of us, without Obstacles in life. This may be a Great Tapestry we are being woven into, but it is not without snags, dropped threads, and fibers torn asunder. It seems that just as we enjoy a smooth and knotless pass through the needle, the thread will catch and rip or tear or snarl. Sometimes these snarls are small and easily repaired, and the needle glides on in its quest toward the brightest picture. And sometimes that snarl shreds our thread and it feels near impossible to pick up the needle again and begin the task of repairing and weaving our thread along the tapestry again. The burden, or the Obstacle, is too heavy, and our souls are weighed down with the load.
But, that is as it should be. I know, that sounds rough. But, as hard as it is to hear this, it is true in that…if we only ever have a smooth road in life, we would know not who we are, or the depth of our strength, or the wisdom we carry within, or the intelligence we have to use to recover from a problem.
While the good times of our lives shape our ability to experience joy, delight and pleasure…which is, in itself, difficult for some people to accept and embrace in their lives…it is the Obstacles that shape the true character we have and teach us more about ourselves through their lessons. It is facing these Obstacles that shows us how resilient we are, and how compassionate and loving we can be…to ourselves as well as to others. If we never had a need to cultivate these abilities, we would not know what they are or how to express them. Or that we might need them ourselves when experiencing that break in our threads. And we would not know how to ask for that need to be fulfilled or be able to give that back when another is in need.
So, when you are faced with an Obstacle, see it as an opportunity to learn and grow and find a positive fiber in this thread that is necessary in the evolution of the weaving of your tapestry. And consider that…the deeper the path or lesson of the Obstacle takes you…the greater the reward and the higher you will soar when you have overcome the Obstacle and found the resolution. It may be a tunnel of darkness that you must pass through, but there is always an end to that tunnel and light and freedom on the other side. Or, at the very least, closure on the issue.
I love the last quote above by Goldie Hawn, where she speaks of the need for mud in order for a beautiful flower to grow. If we can stand at the entrance of the tunnel of an Obstacle and face it with the positive knowledge that, though the ride through it may be difficult, we will reach the other side, and hang on to that thought…then we can get through anything…and be a better person for it.
Keep your eyes on that sliver of light that shines in the darkness and let it guide your way. By the Law of Polarity, there is never just darkness or just light…there is always both. It is what we keep our attention on that stays with us. In the face of Obstacles, let it be that Light.
