What Of This Destiny

“There’s nowhere you can be that isn’t where you’re meant to be.”  ~ John Lennon

“There are winds of destiny that blow when we least expect them. Sometimes they gust with the fury of a hurricane, sometimes they barely fan one’s cheek. But the winds cannot be denied, bringing as they often do a future that is impossible to ignore.”  ~ Nicholas Sparks

“Sometimes the dreams that come true are the dreams you never even knew you had.”  ~ Alice Sebold

“What we call our destiny is truly our character and that character can be altered. The knowledge that we are responsible for our actions and attitudes does not need to be discouraging, because it also means that we are free to change this destiny.”  ~ Anais Nin

“That which we manifest is before us; we are the creators of our own destiny. Be it through intention or ignorance, our successes and our failures have been brought on by none other than ourselves.”  ~ Garth Stein

“Your soul knows the geography of your destiny. Your soul alone has the map of your future, therefore you can trust this indirect, oblique side of yourself. If you do, it will take you where you need to go, but more important it will teach you a kind of rhythm in your journey.”  ~ John O’Donohue

“Even if things don’t unfold the way you expected, don’t be disheartened or give up. One who continues to advance will win in the end.”  ~ Daisaku Ikeda

“Almost nothing important that ever happens to you happens because you engineer it. Destiny has no beeper; destiny always leans trenchcoated out of an alley with some sort of ‘psst’ that you usually can’t even hear because you’re in such a rush to or from something important you’ve tried to engineer. ”  ~ David Foster Wallace

“I have always believed, and I still believe, that whatever good or bad fortune may come our way we can always give it meaning and transform it into something of value.” ~ Hermann Hesse

“It is better to live your own destiny imperfectly than to live an imitation of somebody else’s life with perfection.”  ~ Elizabeth Gilbert

from The Desk of MarDrag:

What is this thing called Destiny? We hear of it often and we are all supposed to have one. Some of us feel we know what our Destiny is, while some are not aware of where their life will take them yet, while even further, some would deny their Destiny or ignore it for many different reasons. But, we are all on some level between knowing, not knowing and ignoring.

So let us look at the definition of Destiny, as the dictionaries, books and scholars would define it:

1)      the events that will necessarily happen to a particular person or thing in the future; a predetermined course of events often held to be an irresistible power or agency; something beyond human power or control; the inevitable or necessary fate to which a particular person or thing is destined; one’s lot;

2)      the hidden power believed to control what will happen in the future; fate; the power or agency thought to predetermine events

So, from these definitions, we can gather that there is “something”….be it God, Higher Powers, the Universe, Soul Energy…..whatever you might wish to define it as……that has a strong hand on how our lives move, how the events in our life turn out and the road that our life path takes. That there is a power, greater than we are, that has a plan for us, and that there is a Higher Purpose for each of us to aspire to live up to and live by. And that there is a reason why each and every one of us was put here, and if we want to live full and happy lives, we should strive to find that purpose and meet it.

I will admit I do believe this sentiment. I lived a great deal of my younger life trying to fit into a place that I did not belong. I thought I was supposed to be a certain person, do a certain job, make a certain amount of money, have a certain amount of things….and then I would live “happily ever after”. Except…I was miserable. I tried to make it work but I knew there was something wrong with what I was doing, and I did not know what or how to fix it.

But, if I were to be completely honest with you….very deep down within the center of my being, I knew something. I kept it hidden and did not let it out very often. I was, by all standards, successful, so what would I leave all that for to do something completely different? And how could I possibly complain or say I was not happy with my life? Then, events happened, an illness, and a long dark time that was part of my Destiny to experience, because when I emerged from that tunnel, my life was changed.

You see, deep within me was this flame….this tiny source of light that I had known was always there but thought I couldn’t let out. I thought I was doing the right thing with the job, etc….everyone told me I was. But, it ultimately didn’t work for me. And when I was in that deep dark cavern and looking for a light to show me a way out….guess where I found it? Yes, within myself. That little spark that never left me, that burned low, and stayed with me until I could gather the wisdom and the strength to fan it into a fire….and that fire….was my Destiny. The winds of Destiny blew within me and I let them rage, and let that fire flame high into a great blaze and it warmed me and motivated me and set me on the path that changed my life forever. And here I am today, doing what I was meant to do with my life. Living my Destiny. Fulfilling what I always knew my purpose for living was….but was too afraid  or distracted by “shoulds” to find out. It may have taken me some time and hard work and lots of mis-takes, but I made it here.

Our souls always know and have the maps for us to follow. But we often have to change some things about ourselves before we can read the map. There is practical work within us and in the world to be done to find our way. If we pray for guidance and answers…. at the very right moment….they will come. That is part of our Destiny. Each step we take, each thought we have, every move we make…..leads us to where we are meant to be, if we choose to look at it that way and give meaning to every step we take. But we must become conscious of those movements to capture their true meaning and embrace their messages. Then, with living our Destiny there comes a certain peace that we are living our true lives. And the struggles and difficulties take on a new purpose.

I have a saying that came from the tunnel: “I mean to live my true life, and I embrace the means by which that will happen”.

If you are unhappy in your life, if you question the road or path that you are on, if you have a small spark within you that keeps flickering to get your attention…….say a prayer for guidance, and then follow the wisdom that voice gives you. It will not always be an easy or smooth road, especially if the life change is drastic, as it was for me. Oh, but I can share with you, that it was all well worth it.

I share this story with you because I do believe we all have a Destiny, a reason for being here that fits just right for each of us, a special purpose that only each of us can fill in our own particular way, and I would wish for you that you would know that all you are going through can be the stepping stones as part of that Destiny, to carry you to the knowledge of that purpose. I wish for you to find yours…and then truly, live happily ever after!

The Thing About Guilt

“There’s no problem so awful, that you can’t add some guilt to it and make it even worse.”  ~ Bill Watterson

“Guilt is not a response to anger; it is a response to one’s own actions or lack of action. If it leads to change then it can be useful, since it is then no longer guilt but the beginning of knowledge.” ~ Audre Lorde

“So full of artless jealousy is guilt, It spills itself in fearing to be spilt.”  ~ William Shakespeare

Guilt isn’t always a rational thing, guilt is a weight that will crush you whether you deserve it or not.”  ~ Maureen Johnson

“When you are guilty, it is not your sins you hate but yourself.” ~  Anthony de Mello,

“Sometimes I just want to paint the words “It’s my fault” across my forehead to save people the time of being pissed off at me.” ~  Christina Westover

“No guilt is forgotten so long as the conscience still knows of it.” ~  Stefan Zweig

“Guilt is a useless feeling. It’s never enough to make you change direction–only enough to make you useless.” ~  Daniel Nayeri

“Guilt is a destructive and ultimately pointless emotion.” ~ Lynn Crilly

“Maybe there’s more we all could have done, but we just have to let the guilt remind us to do better next time.”  ~ Veronica Roth

***“Chronic remorse, as all the moralists are agreed, is a most undesirable sentiment. If you have behaved badly, repent, make what amends you can and address yourself to the task of behaving better next time. On no account brood over your wrongdoing. Rolling in the muck is not the best way of getting clean.”  ~ Aldous Huxley
from the Desk of MarDrag:

I love the first quote above by Bill Watterson about there never being a problem we can’t make worse by piling a large dose of Guilt atop it. That is so true isn’t it? It is not dreadful enough that we feel badly about a problem, are having trouble finding a solution, or are worrying about it….but we have to make it even harder on ourselves by feeling Guilty about all of those things, including the problem itself. That is a lot of heaping of negative energy on top of itself to weigh us down in life…and sometimes, it can weigh us down so much, we land in a pit of darkness that we have trouble getting out of.

And then….we feel Guilty about our Guilt.

Guilt is a great, huge monster that overshadows us and feeds on all those little moments in our lives that we know we could have done better. Our lives are filled with many of those moments, because we are Human and are not infallible or perfect and we can make mistakes and have mis-takes in life. And Guilt will gobble those up and grow robust. And so too, this monster Guilt, will then gobble up all those finer and joyful moments, because Guilt can not let us have any pleasure if we are as bad as to have made mistakes. Oh no…we are not to have a happy moment if Guilt has its way.

You have all heard the expression….”Consumed By Guilt”…and so we are when we allow remorse for our blunders to take control and overcome us. When we do this, that voice of remorse will thunder in our heads, pounding the message that we are inadequate, inferior, stupid, horrid or any number of other salacious and hideous words or phrases that will serve to make us feel bad about ourselves….and then the monster swoops in and devours those thoughts and renders us lost in a shadow of Guilt.  And when we are consumed in this way, we are no longer of our True Selves……for no one can live a full life without some mis-takes and regrets. But, it is whether we learn a lesson and hear the message they have to tell us that marks whether we will be consumed by this great beast we call Guilt. That is not to say that we should never feel remorse, or feel that we are sorry if we said or did something that hurt someone else…..just that we should not let it eat us alive.

Like Fear, Guilt is another monster we give up our power to and it thrives on it, munching on all the morsels we throw it because we can not forgive ourselves…for being Human.

But, consider this…Guilt is an emotion that WE create. WE give it Power. And, it replaces, in some ways, Responsibility. Whether we have done something wrong, had a misunderstanding, knowingly spoke an untruth, failed at an obligation, or any number of other mis-deeds…we panic, and in comes Guilt to take over. But if we turn and face the deed and say…”I did this or I felt this, and I take Responsibility for it”….even if we can not fix it, or were not aware of its potential impact, then we can take our Power back from Remorse and use that Power to either find a solution or to forgive ourselves, feeding those two positive alternatives instead, and starving Guilt of its crumbs.

Guilt is destructive and does not lead us to any kind of positive outcome. Its purpose is to find fault, and then punish, and leads only to more pain and sorrow. But we can beat this monster by taking away its food, by owning up and amending, and this great monster will whither and free us to have our True Selves emerge again…..for are we not all Beautiful even with our imperfections?

Better yet, when Guilt would have our souls….we should feed it Love and Light and Happiness and Joy….and give it gas, to explode its overblown self….and then do the best we can to live a good life, shining our dazzling Light and Beauty…as it is meant to be.

Your Beautiful Self

“You are beautiful. Know this. Anyone who tells you otherwise is simply lying. You are beautiful.”  ~ Steve Maraboli

“In your own life it’s important to know how spectacular you are.”  ~ Steve Maraboli

“Did your mom ever tell you, ‘If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything’? She was right–and talking nicely also applies when you’re talking to yourself, even inside your head.”
~ Victoria Moran

“Letting ourselves be forgiven is one of the most difficult healings we will undertake. And one of the most fruitful.”  ~ Stephen Levine

“I am my own biggest critic. Before anyone else has criticized me, I have already criticized myself. But for the rest of my life, I am going to be with me and I don’t want to spend my life with someone who is always critical. So I am going to stop being my own critic. It’s high time that I accept all the great things about me.”  ~ C. JoyBell C.

“You can be the most beautiful person in the world and everybody sees light and rainbows when they look at you, but if you yourself don’t know it, all of that doesn’t even matter. Every second that you spend on doubting your worth, every moment that you use to criticize yourself; is a second of your life wasted, is a moment of your life thrown away. It’s not like you have forever, so don’t waste any of your seconds, don’t throw even one of your moments away.”  ~ C. JoyBell C.

“Allow yourself to enjoy each happy moment in your life.”  ~ Steve Maraboli

from The Desk of MarDrag:

While the Great Tapestry of Life is being woven with our threads and the threads of all those around us, our own smaller Tapestries are being woven to fit into that bigger picture. The threads of our individual pictures are made up of our experiences, our actions and our energy…..but the most important component that makes up those threads….are our thoughts about ourselves. Those thoughts and impressions that we hold about ourselves weave the very fibers of our threads together and then those threads weave into our pictures, and those pictures are woven into the bigger picture….and our place in the world is made.

So each and every fiber of thought is important. They are essential to the kind of picture we would like to have recorded in our own Tapestries, and then, in the Great Tapestry.

We think many thoughts about ourselves throughout the day. How many of them are good thoughts? How many are thoughts that acknowledge our wisdom and celebrate our innate beauty? How many of them are about how much we love ourselves? For what we think of ourselves is what will be woven into our threads and recorded. And our pictures will either be bright and joyful, or dark and sad.

The definition of Beautiful is this: a) having qualities that delight the senses; of a very high standard; excellent; wonderful; generally pleasing; having qualities of aesthetic beauty. And we ALL….every one of us…..have these qualities. It is just that, sometimes they get buried under stress and worry or we forget to let them shine for one reason or another. Most importantly, we forget to remind ourselves that we possess them. We inundate ourselves with frequent chatter about all that we feel is wrong about us….but we forget that we all have this innate beauty that deserves to shine. We deserve to Feel our beauty…as well as show it.

I love the quote above by C. JoyBell C. that says, “I am my own worst critic, but I do not want to spend my life with someone who is always critical, so it is high time I accept all the great things about me.” It is so profound in that…we seem to easily accept the things we think are wrong with us and criticize…but we have such a hard time accepting the wonderful, spectacular, beautiful things about ourselves and acknowledge them, Be them. And then to weave all of those fine and lovely fibers into our threads so that our Tapestries can be the pictures that we so much want them to be, that they actually truly are, if we can but see them that way. See ourselves for who we truly, and beautifully, are.

You are beautiful! You are magnificent! You have qualities and gifts that no one has exactly like you. Know this. Remind yourself of it daily. Write it down and post it somewhere you will see it every day. Because it is the truth. Believe it….and watch the beauty of your threads weave a glorious picture of a brilliant life for you. And it will be all because….YOU thought it!

Tuesday Affirmations ~ New Ways

It is Tuesday again….and time for “Tuesday Affirmations”! I sit, mulling over my deck “The Gift of Affirmations” by Amy Zerner and Monte Farber. I shuffle them, and spread them across my desk, seeking the message for today. The card I pull is:

The Gift of Truth: “I am open to new Ideas, Techniques, and People.”

“Use this gift when you notice that you are resistant to the possibility that new ways of doing things and new people might contribute to your life and to the attainment of your goals. It is not a weakness but a great strength to know your limits and to let others help you.”

from the Desk of MarDrag:

As we navigate through life, and we focus on issues, difficulties and decision making, we try our best to do what is right for ourselves, our families and the bigger picture of the Great Tapestry. We work hard at processing information and considering our choices. We have concern for how our threads weave and wind to place our contribution to life within that bigger picture.

But, we have a great deal on our minds and in our hearts on a daily basis. There is so much to think about and focus on….and sometimes, we can miss or not see important information that can make our choices easier or opportunities that would enhance our lives and make us happier. We cannot think of everything. Part of our path in life is to learn and grow and expand our way of thinking to include valuable knowledge that we just have not heard of ourselves, in our own world. It is easy to get caught up in our own worlds and forget that there is help, data and wisdom to be had from other people, places and things around us.

It is much like the post I wrote yesterday about our “Puddle In The Street”. I love how symmetry works in this card showing up today! In order to gather more space and information and opportunity, we must allow our life parameters to expand to include those drops of rain/knowledge so that we can better understand ourselves and the world around us and take advantage of the vast possibilities that are at our fingertips and that can make life full and exciting as well as make our choices easier to come by.

As the affirmation says, it is not a weakness but a strength to acknowledge that we do not know everything and to engage the capacity to learn from those who might know something different. It is not a weakness to ask for help either. When we look outside our own circle of life for information or help, it shows we are very wise to seek further understanding of ourselves and the world in general. There are so many amazing things to learn, so many spectacular opportunities to grow. There is likely something just outside your puddle that would make you happy and that would make you say, “Wow, how remarkable and marvelous and I am glad I opened myself to this!”

Consider opening your life, heart and mind to new ideas, information and people, and see how your life can grow in astounding ways when you do. Dare to be bold, be courageous in your seeking. And be not afraid, you deserve it!

Understanding ~ And The Puddle In The Street

Any fool can know. The point is to understand.”  ~ Albert Einstein

“Understanding is the first step to acceptance, and only with acceptance can there be recovery.”  ~ J.K. Rowling

“Just because you don’t understand it doesn’t mean it isn’t so.”  ~ Lemony Snicket

“Everything that irritates us about others can lead us to an understanding of ourselves.”  ~ Carl Jung

“Try to understand men. If you understand each other you will be kind to each other. Knowing a man well never leads to hate and almost always leads to love.”  ~ John Steinbeck

“For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.”  ~ Carl Sagan

“I have been and still am a seeker, but I have ceased to question stars and books; I have begun to listen to the teaching my blood whispers to me.”  ~ Hermann Hesse

“Sometimes it’s not enough to know what things mean, sometimes you have to know what things don’t mean.”  ~ Bob Dylan

“Don’t believe what your eyes are telling you. All they show is limitation. Look with your understanding, find out what you already know, and you will see the way to fly.”  ~ Richard Bach

from The Desk of MarDrag:

As we try to navigate through these hectic lives we lead in today’s world, we can get quite mixed up and confused about which road to take, what decision to make, and what is actually best for ourselves and our paths. We will either focus too closely on one (or a few things), limiting our vision for the bigger picture…..or we become scattered and our focus strays, lighting on many things at one time with no real perception of any of them. Either way, it makes choices and decisions very difficult, which causes us stress, anxiety and feeling pressured. Many would say fear plays a large part in the equation, mostly fear of the unknown and what might happen with the decisions we do make. That fear can paralyze us into doing nothing, and thus, there will be no movement in our lives until greater forces make things happen. But then, we have no control and are at the effect of those forces…and that is not desirable either.

So, what is it that can help us when faced with this dilemma? What can we do to promote positive movement and decision making that will make our lives better?

One thing, an important thing…is to seek to Understand. Often, when our minds are working in overdrive worrying about situations and trying to make choices, we have so many voices talking at one time, we become overwhelmed. And sometimes, when we are overwhelmed, we shut down altogether and don’t make those necessary resolutions at all. One way to stop that chatter, quiet the mind and clear the fog….is to actively seek a better Understanding of what it is we are confused or torn about. Gathering more pieces of information gets our minds operating on a different level, so we are not stuck in panic or anxiety. And, more information helps us Understand the situation better. We can perceive the problem from a different angle, and a solution will slip right in before we know it. If we Understand and interpret the problem in several different ways, then several different solutions can arise as well. The action of Understanding helps give our minds vigor and energy and lifts us out of a static state so we can take the action necessary and then move on, feeling better and more confident for having conquered that challenge.

Think of your life as a Puddle In A Street. The puddle sits there, in its own parameter, in its own small area of the road, not realizing that there is a vast street around it waiting to be claimed. Its knowledge does not include all the possibilities around it, until the drops of rain come, refreshing and filling it. And then the edges of the Puddle grow, expanding it to include more and more area of the road, claiming a larger portion of that road that is just waiting there, ready to be taken. And as the rain fills the Puddle and it grows, it becomes more confident in itself and embraces more and more space, including all that it can until it becomes a mighty Puddle. Think of those drops of rain as pieces of information you gather in your Puddle of life and allow your edges to expand to include more opportunities and possibilities so that you can grow and your life can grow into its own mighty force.

If we expand our Understanding, we can be like the Puddle and allow the edges of our life to grow and expand to include so much more in our lives that will make them richer, fuller, refreshed and vibrant. And thus we can spend more time on enjoying ourselves and doing more in our lives than worrying or being stagnant. Allow those drops of Understanding to fill you and expand to include the endless possibilities your road has to offer.

A Message To My Readers

Happy Friday to all my wonderful readers! Finally, the end of the week is here and the promise of the weekend is upon us.

I wanted to take a moment today to say a few things to those who read the blog and comment, as well as those who lurk.

First and foremost….I want to Thank You for taking time out of your day to come here and read these words that I write for you. They are close to my heart, as all of you are, and I write them with the hope that they, in some small way, will help you with your life issues, or inspire you to make changes, or just lift your spirits. I hear from some of you who tell me that you can relate to the posts and are moved by them….and I can only tell you how much that means to me. I truly believe it is the purpose of my life to help people, to write, and to reach out where I may be needed.  I feel Blessed to be able to fulfill that purpose.

I also want those of you who comment here to know how much I enjoy our conversations and the wisdom you share, with me and with others. In addition, those of you who do not comment and just read, I want you to know how important your presence is too. It has recently come to my attention that there are people in other countries who read the blog……and I am thrilled by that! Those of you in Australia, Canada, South Africa, the UK and India, just to name a few, Thank You for reading! It is amazing to me that this little blog somehow reached out to you over all those miles. It means a great deal to me that you read and find something useful to your lives here. If you have posted comments, they go directly to the spam folder and, because there is a great deal of spam here at WordPress, I delete it all. Please know that I am not intentionally ignoring your comments, they are important to me. Your feelings are also important to me, each and every one of you, so know that I hold you dear.

A couple of you have asked if it is ok to copy and paste my posts to your own sites/blogs and I wanted to let you know, while I love that you want to share them, I would prefer that you do not copy and paste, but share the blog link with those you want to read here too. I am working on copywriting the material and hopefully publishing some of it, so for now, leaving it intact works better for me. BUT, feel free to pass the link along to anyone you think might enjoy a visit here.

Also, if there are any topics you would like me to write about, post them on my “Contact” page.

One more thing, if you read the bio on the “About Me” page, you will see that I do Counseling, both in house and phone sessions. If you are interested in finding out more about the work I do, or you need help, please do not hesitate to email me at the address posted on the “Contact” page. Your thread plays a significant role in how all the other threads are placed and you are essential to the Beauty of the Tapestry. Love yourself for that, and know you deserve the best the life of that Tapestry has to offer.
